The NJCAA Region XIV Baseball Tournament continued with its pattern of long, extra-inning ballgames on Wednesday night as San Jacinto College beat Galveston College 6-5 in 16 innings.
San Jacinto remains the only undefeated team in the tournament. Galveston will play Navarro at 1 p.m. on Thursday (game 13) in order to try to earn the chance for a re-match with San Jacinto at 5 p.m.
San Jacinto started off strong, putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the first. They added another in the bottom of the second, making the score 4-0 San Jacinto going into the fourth.
San Jacinto scored again in the bottom of the fifth before Galveston got on the board with two runs in the top of the sixth. They continued their run in the top of the ninth as they scored three more runs, tying the score 5-5 and sending the game into extra innings.
The 10th through 15th innings went scoreless as both the players and fans began to grow restless. Finally, in the bottom of the 16th, San Jacinto managed to send a player home to score the winning run. The final score was 6-5
Esteban Gomez led the offense for San Jacinto with two hits, including a home run. Reggie Wilson had three hits (one double) and Tyler West had two hits. Justin Byrd also had a double. Kyle Chaskin earned the pitching win with 1 inning. He gave up one hit and one walk.
Jesus Garcia and Kyle Giusti led the Galveston bats with three hits apiece. Derek Wade was credited with the loss with six innings pitched. He gave up three hits, one run, four walks and struck out three.
