The Adult Education department at 91ֿ recently announced that GED (General Education Development) and ESL (English as a Second Language) instructor Carolyn Pope of Mount Pleasant has received the Texas Association for Literacy and Adult Education (TALAE) Adult Education Teacher of the Year Award. Pope, who has taught adult education with NTCC since 1990, was nominated for this honor by colleagues and students. She†received the award at the annual TALAE Awards Dinner on February 2 in San Antonio.
"We we so thrilled to hear that Carolyn was being honored with this award. Her hard work and dedication to the cause of adult literacy has made a difference in so many lives here in our area," Sue Barker, NTCC Director of Adult Education, said.
Pope was one of the first ESL tutors at the Mount Pleasant Adult Education Center (formerly downtown) and has taught in many capacities over the last 22 years. She currently teaches GED and ESL classes four days a week at the Mt. Pleasant Community Adult Education Center. She consistently leads all program sites in the number of students who achieve their goal of passing the GED.
"She (Pope) is truly the meaning of no student left behind. My time with Ms. Pope has given me a totally new outlook at life," Curtis Ivory, a former GED student who is now enrolled in college courses, said.
NTCC offers both GED and ESL classes free of charge to adult students at various locations throughout the area. For more information about either of these programs, please call 903-434-8252.
