Over the past few months, 91ֿ’s Carroll Shelby Automotive Program partnered with Dallas attorney Rob Miller to transform a 1965 Mustang to a racecar that is set to be driven in the 2015 La Carrera Panamericana Race in Mexico starting on Oct. 16. The seven-day race covers 2000 miles across Mexico. The car, which is sponsored locally by Discount Tires and Priefert Steel, will make a quick pit stop in Mount Pleasant on Thursday, Oct. 8 before setting off to Laredo for the start of the race. The car will begin on the Northeast campus at 8:30 a.m. before heading to Discount Tires in Mount Pleasant. Members of the Mount Pleasant Chamber of Commerce and Priefert will be on hand as the car makes its way to be highlighted during a ribbon cutting recognizing Discount Car as a new business in Mount Pleasant.

Miller said the car will have a specialized GPS that allows people to follow its progress throughout the seven-day race. “We will turn it on when we arrive at NTCC on Oct. 8,” Miller said in an email. The link to follow the car can be found at

Northeast Vice President for Advancement Dr. Jonathon McCullough said it’s nice to finally see the car ready to hit the race track. He invited everyone out to see the car at the Shelby building on Oct. 8 before it heads out.

“This is a project that our students and faculty have all assisted with for a long time. It’s great to see it come to fruition,” McCullough said. “We are excited about the upcoming race and can’t wait to see how it all turns out.”
