The Veterinary Assistant program prepares students for a new career in the field of veterinary medicine. Participants will learn about the care of animals as well as how to recognize signs of illness and disease in a variety of animals from common pets to exotic species. This program also covers interpersonal communication, interaction with clients and their animals, as well as how to assist the veterinarian during examinations. Administrative duties, such as fee collection, banking, and accounts payable are also emphasized to provide learners with the skills necessary to maintain an efficient front office. This veterinary assisting course is a vital asset to students who wish to work in this exciting and rewarding field.
As part of this program, students will complete the following hands-on labs and activities:
- Restraining animals during procedures
- Assisting with veterinary procedures
- Assisting in the nursing care of hospitalized animals
- Assisting during surgery
- Administering medications as directed by the veterinarian
- Applying bandages and splints
- Sterilizing instruments
- Assisting with bandaging and splints
- Assisting with patient education
- Filling prescriptions (under the supervision of the veterinarian)
- Performing some lab tests
- Bathing and exercising animals
- Answering phones
- Booking appointments
- Billing and collections procedures
- Assisting with practice management
Certification Opportunities
After completing this program, students will have the opportunity to take the leading national/industry-recognized certification exam(s) essential to entry-level employment in this fast-growing field.
Optional Volunteer Externship Opportunity
Learners who complete this program are eligible to participate in an optional volunteer externship opportunity with a local company/agency/organization whose work aligns with this area of study in order to gain valuable hands-on experience. As students progress through their program, an Externship Coordinator will reach out to coordinate placement.
Note: Additional documentation including health records, immunizations, drug-screening, criminal background checks, etc. may be required by the externship facility.
Financial Aid
Qualifying students may be eligible for financial aid. To qualify for financial aid, students must apply for financial aid through . The financial aid office at NTCC determines eligibility. Students interested in financial aid are encourage to apply at least one month prior to registration. If students qualify for aid, then students can then apply for a Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) and if eligible, can receive up to ½ of the tuition paid by the grant. The balance is the responsibility of the student. Payment plans are available for every situation. Contact Continuing Education for more information.
